Finding the true tastes of Mexico

Boosters of Playa del Carmen, the Mexican resort community situated an hour's drive south of Cancun, claim it's the fastest growing city in Latin America.

That boast is propelled by the thousands of people drawn to the once sleepy fishing village by its creamy beaches, azure Caribbean waters, secure streets and myriad shopping, dining and recreational possibilities.

The Mayan Riviera town has morphed from paradisal backwater to big money resort destination, even as glittering 21st-century Playa has retained a modicum of small-town street cred - local bylaws have kept high-rise hotel towers away from the heart of the town. Well, at least compared with the monoliths and mega malls of Cancun.

The area has a myriad of exotic pleasures, including one of Mexico's most satisfying and arcane regional cuisines. The ancient Maya had marvellous crops like corn, beans, squash, cacao, chilies and tomatoes. Add to that turkey and a rich and varied bounty from the sea.
