Local resident wins national cake competition

Order an ice cream cake from the Dairy Queen on Marine Boulevard, and a world-class decorator will frost the treat.

Staff decorator Michelle Halbrook came in first nationwide and placed third in the world among Dairy Queen employees in last month’s “Iron Tip” ice cream cake decorating competition, held at the company’s biannual convention in Cancun, Mexico. Halbrook, who has worked at the Marine Boulevard location for 12 years, narrowly missed the opportunity to compete at the Iron Tip in 2007, taking the title for the Southeast marketing region and placing just below the decorator who won first in the nation that year.

This year, she faced off against decorators from Canada, the Philippines, Kentucky and Minnesota. And unlike most traditional cake decorating competitions, the medium provided an additional challenge for competitors.

“Basically, make sure you can do it quickly, because it’s ice cream — you don’t want it to melt,” Halbrook said.
